Biography
Georg Breinschmid was born in 1973. He is one of the leading Austrian jazz musicians on the international stage.
Breinschmid studied classical double bass at the Universitiy of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. During his studies he played in various Viennese orchestras (Vienna Philharmonic, Vienna Symphiny etc.) as well as in chamber music ensembles like „Kontrapunkte“ and „Die Reihe“. At the same time he started to play jazz and collaborated with various jazz musicians, among them Zipflo Weinrich. He joined the Lower Austrian Tonkünstlerorchester from 1994-96 and then the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra from 1996-98.
He soon decided to turn his back on his orchestral career and dedicate himself more to his true passion – jazz. Georg Breinschmid has been working as a freelance jazz musician since 1999 and established himself as one of the most versatile and virtuoso bassists oft he international jazz scene. Among many others he collaborated with Archie Shepp, Charlie Mariano, Kenny Drew jr., Bireli Lagrene, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Triology and Megablast. He was resident double bass player of the Vienna Art Orchestra from 1999 until 2006.
The Hans Koller Award in the category „CD of the year“ was presented to Georg Breinschmid, Arkady Shilkloper and Alegre Correa for their album „Mauve“ in 2002. He also won the Hans Koller Award in the „Newcomer of the year“ category the following year and was nominated in the „Musician of the year“ category in 2007 and 2009 as well as in „CD of the year category“ of 2009 as bassist of the Christian Muthspiel Trio (CD „Against the Wind – The Music of Pirchner & Pepl“).
From 2003 on, Georg Breinschmid was increasingly active as composer, with a particular affinity to Viennese Music. His love for Vienna is strongly reflected in his CD project „Wien bleibt Krk“ (2008). In 2010 the double album „Brein’s World“ and the 2-DVD set „Georg Breinschmid Live“ were released and highly acclaimed by critics around the world. In May 2010, Georg Breinschmid and his trio Brein’s Café performed together with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna live at the Europe-wide televised opening of the Wiener Festwochen (Vienna Festival) in front of an audience of millions. Other TV performances include „Annettes DaschSalon“, the NDR literature matinee „Herbstblätter“(with Daniel Hope) and a feature in 3sat „Kulturzeit“.
His CD „Brein’s World“ was on third place in the „CD of the year“-voting by the German „Liederbestenliste“ in 2011. And in 2012 and 2013, Georg Breinschmid was nominated for the Amadeus Austrian Music Award (category Jazz/World/Blues).
Insiders and critics alike consider Georg Breinschmid’s unorthodox compositions as the most interesting new development in contemporary jazz. His compositions are performed and recorded by ensembles such as „Amarcord Wien“, the ensemble „Bass Instinct“ and the Australian Chamber Orchestra (with soloist Benjamin Schmid, 2011). In May 2011 Georg Breinschmid presented for the first time an evening of his compositions with full symphony orchestra, with Lower Austrian Tonkünstler Orchestra (in Vienna’s Musikverein). 2012/2013 further performances of Breinschmid’s music with symphony orchestra follow, a.o. with the Philharmonic Orchestra Brno (CZ), Symphonieorchester Vorarlberg (A), Tiroler Symphonieorchester Innsbruck (A), Bruckner Orchester Linz (A) and Württembergische Philharmonie Reutlingen (D).
